Istana, Labour Day, First May 2006

In all my 26 years, I had never been to the Istana before. And so this year on Labour Day, I paid my visit to the office of the President of Singapore with some of my friends.

It was a sunny day! It was a relaxing, warm stroll from the gate entrance to main builing. The tall beautiful tree cover provided shade over the road. Though it was early morning, many people have already arrived. But who needs a tour guide when you have a brother that knows a bit of the Istana and also have biology friends that can introduced the flora found at Istana.

The main building was opened to public. We got to see the various rooms there and some of the gifts to Singapore from various countries. A pity I do not have photos to show.

Do you know you can find a small golf course there?

Next time it is open again, I would like to explore some more…………….

I am a Singaporean

In response to the mrbrown show

I have a chinese name that has many strokes and take very long to write.

Then I have a dialect name in primary school, change to Hanyu Pinyin and then change back to dialect, all before I pass my PSLE.

I still have not change my IC with my Primary Six photo on it. They must have forgotten about it.

I do not have a Christian name since I am no Christian.

I can speak English and Chinese and can swear effectively in Hokkien especially when I am driving.

I am mild tempered but those drivers can really drive me up the wall.

I love my job because I get to drive a lot. But I think our expressway speed limit should increase and cars with speed less than 100 should keep off the inner lane.

I struggle to pass my IPPT because I am PES B while those fitter than me got PES C and D and skip their reservist. Life is never fair.

But those who illegally “skipped” their NS should be de-Singaporean regardless they got talent or not.

I want to live outside Singapore but still be a Singaporean. Somehow I think I can help Singapore globalized this way.

My current wife is my fifteen year old Toyota Corrolla whom I named Peggy. I hope to find my true love and closed my SDU account which I got when I graduate.

I just started work but already owed enough to get me bankrupt if I do not repay on time. I do not even own a credit card. Nor do I dare.

I love nature in Singapore. There is still many secrets to see. And I want to be able tell my children, “Let’s go see a colugo at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.”

There are corals in Singapore.

I love the Wanton Mee at Pandan Garden, Char Kway Teow at Teban Garden, Fish and Chip at Henderson, Carrot Cake at Jurong East, Loh Duck Rice at Meiling Street and Kway Chap at Ghim Moh. My target weight of 70 kg seem so far away.

I love Teddy Bear, know how to make them and in my dream I want to have a shop of them, a studio maybe, a factory even. 10 years down the road we sure see.

I am no Brokeback.

I was born here. I survived my one-room HDB childhood. I survived my PSLE, both my O and A level, survived my NS and my Uni. I hope I can survive the future like all fellow Singaporeans.

My name is Lim Chen Kee. My name is Lin Zhenqi. 我叫林政麒。 And I am a Singaporean. So say we all.

So say we all.
